Our Structure
Purpose
For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake (II Corinthians 4:5).
As we go about our mission, we are glad to present the story of Jesus as Good News on the campus and in the community. We seek to honor and glorify Christ through word and deed as we encourage every member of the Blacksburg church to be working, involved, and growing spiritually in Christ. We do this through sharing our resources, providing dynamic, effective ministries that meet real needs, supporting Christian brothers and sisters in mission fields, and caring for others on campus and in the community. Above all, we try to show the same love to one another as Jesus showed to us.

Common Ground is a tutoring and mentoring ministry started by Blacksburg Church of Christ in 2008.
Our goal is to make disciples of Jesus. The name Common Ground reflects our approach: we meet people where they are—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—helping them work through real problems, doubts, fears, and concerns. Our focus is the Oak Forest trailer park community in Blacksburg.
We pursue discipleship through Bible lessons and homework help for children on Thursdays, and we also provide transportation to church on Wednesday nights. Many of these kids may not hear God’s Word elsewhere and often need academic support. Through these activities, we demonstrate God’s love and care, while our staff members grow in their own discipleship and learn to share Christ with others.
As our 15-passenger van fills with students and the space we rent in Oak Forest becomes crowded, we hope to continue expanding the ministry to reach even more children in the community.

Our ministry to students at Virginia Tech, focused on helping young adults grow as disciples of Jesus while navigating college life.
Our goal is to meet students where they are—spiritually, emotionally, and socially—and to provide a community where they can explore and deepen their faith. We offer regular devotionals, coffee shop Bible studies, worship nights, outreach to fellow students, and retreats that help students connect with God and one another.
Through these activities, students are encouraged to grow in their understanding of Scripture, develop leadership and discipleship skills, and share Christ’s love with their peers. Our ministry seeks to equip students to live out their faith both on campus and beyond, while fostering lasting friendships and a supportive community.

Youth Ministry is our ministry for middle and high school students, designed to help them grow as disciples of Jesus while building lasting friendships.
We meet on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights for classes and devotionals, and we enjoy special activities like lock-ins, movie nights, lake days, and retreats. Our teens also participate in mission trips, including trips to Honduras, where they experience firsthand the joy of serving others. Over the years, many teens have given their lives to Christ through baptism, and many more continue to grow in faith through these opportunities.
Whether studying God’s Word, attending Bible camp, or enjoying outdoor adventures, our youth ministry seeks to combine faith, fun, and fellowship in a way that helps students connect with Christ and one another.

In 1986, a Virginia Tech Student from Honduras, Noe Perez, introduced the Blacksburg Church to the mission work in Central America and to the Baxter Institute. The Baxter Institute is a four-year Bible College that serves Latin America. Its clinics provide free medical, dental, and prosthetic care, serving the needs of many people. Students from eleven Latin countries study there and, after graduation, return to their home countries to teach.
VCOM medical school has partnered with the clinic at Baxter Institute. While at the clinics, patients are invited to student led Bible studies. For families that are suffering from malnutrition, food is provided for one year, and in that year, classes for sewing, barber/beautician, or restaurant food preparation and service are provided to the parent so they will be able to provide for their family.
The Medical Clinic at Baxter, provides medicine and health care to more than 12,000 patients annually. As of December 2023, the Hope To Walk clinic has built and fitted over 1000 prosthetic legs.
The Blacksburg church has been able to send our youth groups to Central America where they have built clinics and helped with many other needs for the people.

Children’s Education Ministry provides a safe, fun, and welcoming environment where kids can learn about Jesus through engaging, hands-on activities. Each Sunday morning, children participate in programs before worship, and on Wednesday nights, they join us for additional learning, games, and fellowship. Our goal is to help kids grow in their understanding of God’s Word, build friendships with other children, and experience the love of Christ in a caring, supportive setting.

Outreach Ministry exists to make everyone feel welcomed, cared for, and connected—both inside our church and in the surrounding community. Through teams like the Welcome Team, Assisted Living Team, and Reconnection Team, we serve guests, seniors, and those returning to church, helping them feel valued, supported, and loved. Our goal is to create a church environment where everyone experiences the warmth and fellowship of a true church family.
Beyond these efforts, Outreach Ministry engages the wider community through events, service projects, and relationship-building initiatives. By meeting practical needs, offering encouragement, and sharing Christ’s love in tangible ways, our ministry helps bridge the gap between the church and the community, fostering connections that last and transforming lives both inside and outside our walls.
